Free School Meal Pilot
You will no doubt already have heard the fantastic news that school meals are FREE to all primary school-age pupils for a period of two academic years beginning from September 2009. This is because Durham is one of two Local Authorities in England that has been chosen by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to pilot an initiative to look at the relationship between what children eat and the possible effects on their levels of performance and concentration, behaviour and general health; including levels of obesity.
In agreeing to take part in this pilot scheme, parents will save the cost of a school lunch, which from September 2009 means a saving of £1.70 per day, or £8.50 per week, per child. You are entitled to take part in the pilot even if your child does not normally take a school meal and, in fact, the more that take part the better the outcome for analysis purposes. Please be assured that the current high quality and choice in existing school meals provided will be maintained without exception.
